10 Songs To Dedicate To Your Wanderlust

Before you go on, I want to inform you that I finally made an official Instagram account! I plan to fill it with only the best of my best travel photos from the past, and of course recent ones. Follow me there and I promise to take you to another world 😉 I’m at instagram.com/girlunspotted

When I’m on a long journey and I have no one else but myself, I like to put on my headphones and listen to a carefully crafted playlist. Sometimes, a good vagabond-related song makes the experience even more enjoyable to me. Not only does it give me a sense of positivity, but it does inspire me to chase after the world even more. Who doesn’t love a good song about staying young and free? I’d like to share my favorite ones, so here’s 10 songs that never fails to induce wanderlust!

1.) Wanderlust (Snakehips Remix) – The Weeknd

“Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go everywhere”

“You’re in love with something bigger than love. You believe in something stronger than trust. Wanderluuuuust….”

This just might be the ultimate female wanderlust song. It never fails to put me in a good mood. Sometimes, the best relationship you’ll ever have is with travel.

2.) Drops of Jupiter – Train

“Now that she’s back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there’s room to grow…”

I’d like to believe this song talks about a girl who decided to leave the comfort of her life in search of true happiness and something bigger. When she returns, her lover that she left behind worries that she’ll never be the same person he once knew (he’s probably right). When you listen closely to the song, it talks about the growth that inevitably happens once you leave your comfort zone– all the possibility you come across, the changes you make, and the things you learn that you may never do if you stay with what you’re accustomed to. Whether you like it or not, travel is bound to change you.

3.) Moon River – Andy Williams

“Two drifters off to see the world…there’s such a lot of world to see”

Probably the most romantic of all wanderlusting songs. Travel and fall in love. Isn’t that the dream?

4.) Vagabond – Wolf Mother

“I’ll tell you everything about living free…”

When I hear the intro of the song, I picture myself sticking my head out in a train in Thailand. It’s the beat of freedom and not giving a ffffff.

5.) Sweet Disposition – The Temper Trap

“Oh, reckless abandon like no one’s watching you…”

“Just stay there, cause I’ll be coming over. While our blood’s still young, so young it runs, won’t stop til it’s over. Won’t stop to surrender…”

I love love love this song. It reminds me of just being young and chasing freedom with someone you love. I think freedom itself is what I love most about travel. There’s no stopping you.

6.) Scar Tissue – Red Hot Chili Peppers

“With the birds I’ll share this lonely view…”

The song may not be entirely about travel, but this happens to be my official road trip song. I listened to this every time I’m traveling to different cities or crossing borders when I backpacked Southeast Asia.

7.) Golden Haze – Wild Nothings

“Wild heart, surrender to me, what does it take to be like you. Golden haze, hold out for days…”

This is such a beautiful song. Who knows what it’s really about. I’m assuming it’s about free spirits and wild hearts. The best kinds of people 😉

8.) Pure Shores – All Saints

“I’m moving, I’m coming, can you hear what I hear? It’s calling you my dear out of reach, take me to my beach…”

The official soundtrack of the ultimate backpacker movie. Being a self-proclaimed beach bum, there’s no way I’m not going to like this song.

9.) Across The Universe – The Beatles

“Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, they call me on and on across the universe…”

I don’t exactly know what “Jai Guru Deva Om” means, but listening to this takes me into another world.

10.) A Whole New World – Aladdin and Jasmine

“A whole new world, a new fantastic point of view. No one to tell us no or where to go, or say we’re only dreaming. A whole new world, a dazzling place I never knew. But when I’m way up here, it’s crystal clear that now I’m in a whole new world with you.”

Aladdin and Jasmine are the OG wanderlusters. This song is possibly my favorite *love* song as well, because I personally think falling in love is like entering someone’s universe that’s entirely different from yours. And that’s exactly what travel feels to me. Another world. Another universe. And falling in love.

  1. I only know Moon River and A Whole New World, the rest of the songs in your list aren’t familiar to me at all! Maybe because I’m a certified homebody and don’t have wanderlust. 🙂

  2. A whole new world! Haha I can always imagine my childhood with that song. I wasn’t a fan of aladdin but was pretty sure i know the song. ahahah Great list you have here. 😀

  3. A whole new world, that’s exactly how I feel each time I see something new. It’s also something I think of even if I revisit a place… creating new memories. OH… and I love red hot chili peppers

  4. I know most of the songs, except for three. The Weeknd is really a hot act now. I really really like Pure Shores! Thank you for mentioning that in your list. – Fred

  5. Honestly, A whole new world doesn’t fit in quite well to the list because of the difference in sound, but they really are the OG wanderlust couple!! :)) It’s actually my first time hearing half the songs on this list, and I totally agree they’re good for a long ride.
